Fly Between Falls

Saw ALO open for Jack Johnson at the Greek Theater in UC Berekely. I ordered the album from an online independent retailer mainly for the duet with Jack, Girl I Wanna Lay You Down which they played in concert.

Very solid album. If you like Jack Johnson, you may like ALO. It's worth a listen.

Jack Johnson @ The Greek UC Berkeley

I'm watching the recently released DVD of Jack's performance at the Greek Theater. Farrah and went to one of the shows that was taped for this DVD. Here was the review / impressions I had of that concert.

Concert date: 08.20.2005

Our first Jack Johnson concert was, musically, as good as could be expected. Jack was strong his in vocals though he did rattle off songs one after the other. We come to find out they were taping the show for a DVD, and that Jack was a little nervous. So nervous was he that he flubbed two songs. Embarrassed by each mistake he restarted each song when he cracked his voice or missed a lyric.

Matt Costa opened the concert, followed by Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) - who Jack joined on stage for "Girl I Wanna Lay You Down". The crowd was into Matt Costa and was really into ALO, who put on a strong performance. One of their highlights was a song about "Pecs" which was dedicated to our Governor.

Jack came out pretty songs, mixing songs from his various albums. I wish I could give you a list of songs, but I didn't take note. He played all the usual songs, such as:

F-Stop Blues
Inaudible Melodies
Fluke
Sitting, Waiting, Wishing / Just What I Needed (The Cars)
Gone

With "Sitting Waiting and Wishing" he told the story of how he had to learn how to sing the song backwards. If you haven't seen the video everything goes in reverse except Jack's mouth. He sung a few bars before breaking out into the regular song. I think it was in this song that he sung a verse or two from "Just What I Needed". This sort of reminds me of what Pearl Jam likes to do in concert with songs like Jeremy, Daughter and Release. Jack had a some of the opening act memebers show up during his set, and Money Mark was in town to join in a number or two.

General admission shows are some times the hardest ones to enjoy. All the pushing and shoving, jockeying for position. Getting into position wasn't a problem at the Jack Johnson concert. The crowd we were around was like a big 'frat party' - a college thing. The vocal agenda of the people directly behind us was to get wasted and scream at every song as if it were their favorite. The agenda of the people two couples directly in front of us was to enjoy whatever drugs they were on as well as enjoy each others' company. (Pssst - we think they were into swinging. At least that was the story we decided to make up between ourselves.)

In any event, the show was enjoyable. It would be nice to see Jack Johnson in a small venue like the Warfield or the Fillmore next time, but I think he enjoys the outdoors too much; at least that's my sense.
