Power of Association
I'm really interested in the role that music plays in memories. There are many songs that have very intense memories -- good and bad -- connected to them for me. I'm sure I'm not unusual in this regard; I'd imagine that most people have songs that bring back a more-vivid-than-usual memory of a time in their lives or of a particular person or event. More than that, though, I've found that songs can trigger memories of other songs for me. I just listened to Against All Odds on Hits by Phil Collins, which was the first song on a long-defunct mix tape I made in junior high. As the last notes faded away, I fully expected to hear Take On Me on Hunting High And Low by A-Ha next, just because it was the second song on the tape. I can't tell you at the moment what the third song on the tape was, but I bet that if I listened to Take On Me right now, I would remember.

Right Here, Right Now on Doubt by Jesus Jones
Unbelieveable on Schubert Dip by EMF
Losing My Religion on Out Of Time by R.E.M.
As with many mixed tapes, I listened to it exhaustively. One day I was listening to the radio, and they played Right Here, Right Now, followed by Unbelievable. It was unbelievable (pun intended). They did not, however, play Losing My Religion afterwards.
