Grab your sweatbands, let's meet at the TV!

With all these new interactive video games emerging and increasing in popularity, kids are spending more and more time playing them. Parents are starting to question what benefits these games bring...rather, can a video game make our kids more fit? Can they make ME more fit?
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) conducted a study to answer this question. They used DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and have determined that it is comparable to other aerobic activities and if use regularly, CAN result in weight loss.
Adults burn more calories than kids while playing the game. How much exercise did they actually get? According to ACE, the participants burned: 5.9 kcal/min on light mode (comparable to an easy walk on a treadmill), 6.7 kcal/min on standard mode (equivalent to riding a bike about 12 to 14 miles and hour) and 8.1 kcal/min on difficult mode (similar to the benefits obtained with high-impact aerobics).
The Nintendo Wii, of course, also provides different levels of calorie burning exercises.
The entire article can be read here.
Although these games will never truly replace a workout at the gym, it's still better than what kids were playing on the TV a decade ago.

I think this is great! Anything to get kids (and parents for that matter) moving and interacting with each other (not only the screen). Obesity is a real problem in the world, especially in America, and we need more things like this!

It's also especially nice that the games for Nintendo Wii are simple... parents can learn to play relatively easily, and can play with their kids. Say goodbye to the TV as a babysitter :-P
