Yay for high gas prices??

~ May 13, 2008 at 16:28 by kalong (Views: 23 )

According to FitSugar, research has predicted that for every $1 that a gallon of gas rises, US obesity will reduce by 15%. This is due to us being forced to walk, bike (esp in corvallis!), or take public transportation. It may also force us to eat at home in order to avoid driving out to resturants!

I guess we should always look on the bright side of things, right? :-D

Homemade sushi?

~ April 3, 2008 at 14:22 by kalong (Views: 18 )

I just read an article on the risks of making sushi at home. Almost everyone loves sushi, a japanese delicacy. Pretty much, it's RAW fish guys-don't try it at home.

Going Vegetarian?

~ March 28, 2008 at 13:10 by oregon_strand (Views: 67 )

OK, I'm not sure why but lately I've been really shying away from eating meat as much as possible... the problem with going vegetarian with me is I'm not big on vegies either. Isn't there something between meats and vegetables, oh is it fruit? Maybe I can become a fruitarian and start a new fad... fruit must have just as much to offer as vegetables and I like must fruits. Do vegetarians eat things made with eggs? Not sure where to go from here... and seems that I'm not cut out to be a vegetarian any advice oh knowledgeable one? --- Meat is Disgusting Lately ---

My shopping list.

~ March 18, 2008 at 12:11 by kalong (Views: 26 )

I went grocery shopping with a girlfriend last night after we hit the gym, and while we were in line to check out our food, she goes "Damn you eat so healthy, whenever I go grocery shopping, I just think chips and and crackers to store at home!" I looked at her in shock and said "I like grocery shopping because that's when you have a CHOICE of what you eat, when you don't go grocery shopping, that's when you're stuck with chips from the school vending the machine!"

After some thought, I was inspired to summarize some practical and commonly approved strategies for grocery shopping by people who are health conscious and want to make better choices at the store...

1. Plan ahead. Figure out how what meals you are planning for how many days, and what is needed for them.
2. Make a list. And stick to it. Include lots of snacks, but be open to new healthy food options. This helps impulse purchases.
3. Shop the perimeter of the store for the good stuff, like dairy, meats, fruits and veggies. The fresh stuff is usually all there!
4. Eat first. Shopping for food when you are hungry is a no-no.
5. Read food labels. This is where people have the toughest time. This helps you compare two similiar food items so you make the best choice!

You can read where I got these tips from on http://health.yahoo.com/nutrition-healthyhabits/shopping-strategies-for-healthy-foods/mayoclinic--EDA7F312-E7FF-0DBD-13F7AA939C56EAE0.html.

If you follow these guidelines, it really helps! I unconsciously carried out most of the pointers above last night, and this is what I ended up with:

5 Gala apples
Packet of string cheese
Stack of honey wheat bagels
Non fat cream cheese
2 Non fat strawberry yogurts
1 lb of cinnamon raisin granola
.5 lb of chocolate covered raisins
Box of strawberry Special K snack bars
1 can of whole sliced pineapples

But what kind of sucks is that I never have meat at home, for that I'll eat out cause if I bought any kind of meat, I wouldn't know how to cook it...since I don't cook at all.

American Dream...

It's not pizza, it's an abomination.

Food Fight!!

~ March 11, 2008 at 11:18 by kalong (Views: 25 )

Okay, so what if this has nothing to do with healthy eating, it made me hungry and I thought the chornography was wonderfully done. I wish I had taken more history classes in high school to figure out what was going on though, I only understand a few scenes (oh those poor japanese sushi rolls getting the atomic meat patty dropped on them!!)

Grab your sweatbands, let's meet at the TV!

~ March 10, 2008 at 16:52 by kalong (Views: 22 )

With all these new interactive video games emerging and increasing in popularity, kids are spending more and more time playing them. Parents are starting to question what benefits these games bring...rather, can a video game make our kids more fit? Can they make ME more fit?
The American Council on Exercise (ACE) conducted a study to answer this question. They used DDR (Dance Dance Revolution) and have determined that it is comparable to other aerobic activities and if use regularly, CAN result in weight loss.
Adults burn more calories than kids while playing the game. How much exercise did they actually get? According to ACE, the participants burned: 5.9 kcal/min on light mode (comparable to an easy walk on a treadmill), 6.7 kcal/min on standard mode (equivalent to riding a bike about 12 to 14 miles and hour) and 8.1 kcal/min on difficult mode (similar to the benefits obtained with high-impact aerobics).
The Nintendo Wii, of course, also provides different levels of calorie burning exercises.
The entire article can be read here.
Although these games will never truly replace a workout at the gym, it's still better than what kids were playing on the TV a decade ago.

Let's give TEA a try!

~ February 26, 2008 at 10:36 by kalong (Views: 38 )

Did you know that tea is the most common beverage enjoyed worldwide, after water? Tea is full of powerful antioxidants that improve concentration, gently boost energy, and make people happier! Herbal tea is also a healthy alternative to your morning coffee, with black tea containing one third of the same amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee. And being a zero-calorie drink, tea is a wonderful way to slim down as well. Different herbs in tea can also soothe, relax, and energize throughout the day. You can read the whole article at Yahoo Health
As for myself, this sounds like an awesome idea. I usually DO order a ginger and lemon tea and add honey when I'm sick, but I have never really considered replacing coffee with tea. I've always been encouraged to do so (coming from my asian relatives and family friends who all love tea), and I know tea is full of health benefits but I used to dislike how it tasted. But there are many different herbs and favors out there and I'll make it my new project to discover which one I will make a daily habit! Who will join my tea party? :-)
