As you probably well know there are many different cherries out there. In the realm of those you eat, the choices are much broader than the ones that you would garnish a drink with. Buzz kill? Take some Windex to your dirty mind!
To my knowledge there are only three drink cherries out there. Red Maraschino cherries which we all know and love, Green Maraschino cherries which are slightly minty tasting and Amarena Cherries. The Amarena is a small, dark, wild cherry that grows in the Amare region of Italy and is candied like the Maraschino. Needless to say, it is divine and the dark syrup that it is packaged in is fabulous on desserts as well as in drinks. If you are fortunate enough to find a bottle or can of these jewels you might try changing the grenadine you usually use for the Amarena syrup.
MMMmmmmmmm!
3 parts vodka
1.5 parts strawberry liqueur
1.5 parts raspberry pucker
Garnish with an Amarena cherry
The cocktail is an original American creation and is 200 years old this year. Apparently prohibition really stunted the development of the cocktail and many mixologists feel that we are just now returning to the glory of what was before some idiot decided we were better off dry. I hear that the Bellagio in Vegas serves "destination cocktails". Music to my ears!
Interestingly, most martini drinkers don't wear the "my drink is superior badge". They may internally scoff at or refuse the offer of a beer or glass of wine but don't generally run around beating their chests and proclaiming loudly that their beverage of choice is clearly the only one worth imbibing. Why so many beer and wine drinkers do this is an enigma to me. It's alcohol and in my book all alcohol is good. Then again, trying to convince a Baptist that they are not the only ones going to heaven is pointless.
Let's stretch a little, huh?
2 parts vodka
2 parts saki
2 parts pear brandy
Garnish with mandarin orange slices.
As the name suggests, you can layer a drink of different ingredients or contrasting colors by carefully pouring each ingredient into a glass so that it floats on its predecessor. Starting with the most dense liquid in the bottom of the glass, place the bar or tablespoon against the edge of the glass and pour very slowly down the handle of the bar spoon or into the bowl of the table spoon. Repeat with the next liquid. Success Tips- this is more successful in narrower mouthed glasses and always go from heavy to light in terms of liquid density
3 parts Bombay Saphire Gin
2 parts Grand Marnier
1 part sweet-n-sour mix
Garnish with a Marachino cherry
*Warning-this drink packs a deceptive punch
Hey Suebee3, a Kir Royal is a perfect New Years Eve cocktail! The traditional version is made with creme de cassis which is a black currant liqueur. However, I have also had it made with Chambord which is black raspberry, so why not red raspberry as yet another variation.
