Re-listen to this

Another in the category of tales we never heeded in the US, Bird In The Hand, A is still relevant even though the Bush he was talking about was the spy who shagged us all, former CIA director George Bush, not the current jackass.

This song reminds us that there was a time when "gangsta rap" really was a reflection of reality as opposed to the culture ho's that claim to be hard now.

1 drum machine and a microphone

In Beck's ode to early hip-hop, Where Its At, he marvels about what can be done with just "two turntables and a microphone". Audio Two broke it down even further, on Top Billin'. With nothing but a drum machine, a microphone and a couple of studio effects they put together a hip-hop classic that still gets airplay on "urban" (read: corporate shills passing themselves off as authentic) radio today.

When I first heard Top Billin' and I Don't Care in the summer of '87 (I think it was 1987), I immediately went out and bought the tape and scratched along with Giz on the ridged side of the cassette case with my fingernail. YEAH Old School, Son.

"Troops in Afghanistan"

Check the line in Any Which Way...Freedom where Mutabaruka refers to "Troops in Afghanistan..." Release date of the record: 1989.

What have we learned?

Jealousy!

When I first heard the original Old Devil Moon by Anita O'Day I immediately thought the piano intro featuring the amazing chops of Oscar Peterson was ripe for the remixing. I began playing around with sampling the first two bars and playing with beats and within about an hour had the beginnings of a funky little remix.

Then I picked up this CD featuring the track: Bossa For The Devil. As soon as I heard the track I turned green with envy as I heard Dr. Rubberfunk's remix of Old Devil Moon using the exact same Oscar Peterson intro as its core loop. So yes, I'm hatin' on Dr. Rubberfunk, but only because he got it right and I admit, I listen to this groove all the time.

Gutteral Noises Never Sounded So Good

Big Time Sensuality was the first Bjork son I ever heard, while working retail. I thought "Who's that grunting and why do I like it?" She's figured out a way to use communicate through her first language, Gutteral Bjorkese and her third language, (assuming Icelandic is second) English to get a whole lot out of sometimes sparse lyrics.

This is a lesson a lot of singers could learn from. Actors say there are no small roles only small actors, singers could say "There are no insignificant lyrics, only missed musical opportunities.
