Hedwig
July 22, 2006
Saw a live performance of Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Black Box Theatre. I've played the soundtrack to this musical more than any other cd. After seeing the movie and a live performance in Cincinnati I was hooked on this quirky, painful story of multiple divisions: gender, love, sex, and nation. Unlike the Cincinnati performance, this one took place at a venue that only holds 70 people. I sat at a table about two feet (and at one point, 1/2 inch) from fabulous Hedwig, played by Joseph Beurelein. This is the first time I've had the opportunity to sit so close to a performance that meant so much to me. Unfortunately the audience was very subdued and had an average age of about 50. Season ticket holders maybe? They were good sports however about my unbridled enthusiasm and efforts to get them to stand up for the audience participation portion of "Wig in a Box."
I thought it appropriate to dress in the spirit of the musical. My closet is lacking in the high glam so I went with a retro look. I could of sworn there was scene in the movie where Hedwig wore a forties era outfit. I don't get many changes to pull out the long gloves and liquid eyeliner.
If you are new to Hedwig listen to soundtrack playlist I posted.
