Amazon Mp3s DRM free

~ September 25, 2007 at 10:23 (Views: 27 )

I was reading a post by Marshall Kirkpatrick who recently joined Read/WriteWeb about his experience about Amazon MP3 downloads. The possibility that it could be relatively painless was good enough for me to go and try it out for myself. Two birds with one stone for me today, I also discovered Cocorosie which I'm listening to now. Didn't know them before but am a fan of Anthony & the Johnsons so I went ahead and got Noah's Ark to check out these indie-falsetto duos.

The experience? Pretty seamless and at least I can listen to all these files on my N95.

I had to get a mac today for work and dropped by the Mac store on 58th and 5th. These guys really are the masters of consumer design and marketing. The modern and beautiful simple line showroom, pleasant lighting, bustling consumer excitement and young-tekkie-hipster personnel make you feel that that iconic grooving iPod silhouette plastered on walls and sides of buildings everywhere, is in fact you. After you buy something of course...

TED: Technology, Entertainment, Design

~ September 14, 2007 at 9:12 (Views: 53 )

TED is an annual conference that brings together some of the visionaries of our time, fascinating figures-thinkers and doers, that in 18 mins give what is hoped the talk of their lives to inspire the public with the power of ideas to change attitudes and the world. The conference is held in Monterrey, CA and founded by Chris Anderson and owned by the Sapling Foundation. You can access their catalogue of the best presentations here, for free.

To announce and create awareness of the May 2008 Pangea Day, TED has posted a video on Youtube for the next 24 hours and across Youtube's nine international pages for viewers to see, rate and pass it on. Pangea Day, and its mission is quoted below:

The video heralds the launch of Pangea Day, called for by 2006 TED prize winner, Jehane Noujaim. The project is taking off, and its ambition level is spectacular. On May 10, 2008 - Pangea Day - Jehane’s wish will come to fruition as sites in New York City, Rio, London, Dharamsala, Cairo, Jerusalem, and Kigali will be video-conferenced live to produce a 4-hour program of powerful films -supplemented by visionary speakers, and global musicians. The purpose: to use the power of film to promote better understanding of our common humanity. A global audience will watch through the Internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

This article in the NYT made me think of the people at the office who have 3-4 mocha frappucinos a day. Enjoy!

Left in the Internet Advertising Dust

~ September 12, 2007 at 7:30 (Views: 17 )

This just in from Digital Media Wire:

New York - While overall U.S. ad spending fell 0.3% during the first half of 2007, compared with the same period a year ago, the Internet advertising sector led all others with a 17.7% increase, to $5.5 billion, according to a report from TNS Media Intelligence.

No surprise. I was just thinking about my network of friends and how we never talk about what we saw on TV anymore. Okay, granted I haven't owned a tv for 6 years now but I don't find it lacking. I can still watch movies with my projector, check what's going on the tv circuit online, or go to netflix if I fancy watching a movie right then and there with their "watch now" feature. I'm not a terrible sports fanatic so I guess being able to follow sports is less dire for me. We go to the movies quite often and I find that I read a lot more in the evenings. I imagine you're like me too. Your eyeballs are probably more on the computer than ever.

With internet, advertisers can track your page visitation patterns, your purchase patterns, customize advertising based on your search keywords and place advertising in all different kinds of format, rich media, spliced clips or in moments when least expected in the form of an off tangent ad story embedded in other media content. TV eyeballs seem able to tune out of the tv standard formats. And I bet it's even worse in Spain where tv commercial breaks are as long as 20 minutes so it's easier for the viewer to get up from the sofa, have a drink, a pee, a smoke, a snack and still be back in time for the episode to continue.

The only disgruntled comment I have is that as sophisticated as internet advertising has become, I'm getting tired of spending my days before a rectangular panorama, whether it's a computer screen, a book, a windshield, a cellphone or a subway door...but it's hard not to want to look!

Btw, just saw a great article in today's NYTimes about "The Graying of the Internet" and the line that killed me was, "it's like facebook with wrinkles". I'm glad that the internet doesn't discriminate.

Bottom Up Technology

~ September 11, 2007 at 7:33 (Views: 15 )

This is encouraging to see.

Through founder Amy Smith, who's a lecturer at MIT, the International Development Design Summit was held for 4 weeks over this past summer to develop real world solutions for the billions of people who live on less than a dollar a day. Concrete and affordable solutions: helping villagers carry back water, burn less smoke causing charcoal or use manure to charge a cell phone/flashlight, all made of materials that can be procured cheaply, repaired easily and created in the context of the environment in which it would be used. This workshop is very much like the exhibition David and I saw this past May at the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in NYC which explores design for the other 90% of the world's population and demonstrates some excellent examples of solar energy, portable housing, irrigation systems and wi-fi access on a motorcycle. Imagine that, the other 90%...

El significado de Kwak

~ September 10, 2007 at 14:05 (Views: 33 )

Can violent computer games help me parallel park any better?

~ September 10, 2007 at 8:00 (Views: 38 )

Interesting read about biological determinism in this week's Economist, Science and Technology section. I'm talking about the article, Nurture Strikes Back. According to a study conducted by Ian Spence at the University of Toronto, test groups of women and men were told to locate unusual objects in their field of vision. Male success rate: 68%, female success rate: 55%.

Then the two groups were asked to play a video game called "Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault", involving what I imagine a lot of shooting and aggressive offensives. After playing the game, both the men and women's success rates were the same, and remained so after 5 months.

So what does this mean? It could mean that the hoopla about sex differences in spatial acuity is something that can be controlled or improved, or that in the nature v. nuture argument, it all comes down to the nurture aspect of it. Could it be? This give me hope for improving my driving skills which is a work in progress...in spite of the fact that the driver parked next to me in the parking lot insisted that he pull out his car (and then sped off) before I could finish parking in my spot. Hey, the car was a rental and a jeep so I couldn't see very well.
