"Back in Black" by AC/DC

~ March 2, 2006 at 22:19 (Views: 110 )

There's no doubt in my mind that AC/DC's Back In Black is one of the best rock 'n' roll albums of all time. However, whenever I think about this album, I think back to 1980 when the album was released.

I was in the 6th grade, and this album was huge at the time. All of my friends had it, and we actually stopped playing air guitar along to Kiss's Alive II (I was always Gene Simmons, so I guess I played air bass) to listen to this album. I was tired of only being able to listen to it at a friend's house, so I asked my parents if I could buy my own copy.

We went to a local album store (and we lived in Southern California at the time, so the local record store felt like it was 45 minutes away in Saturday traffic), and I went right to the cassette tape section to locate a copy of Back In Black . When I found it, I grabbed the most pristine copy I could find, and ran over to my parents so they could look it over. They spent what seemed like an eternity looking it over, and eventually decided that it was okay. We bought it, and I went home with my own very own copy on cassette tape.

Looking at this album now, I can't believe my parents bought this for me. With tracks like What Do You Do For Money Honey, Given The Dog A Bone, Let Me Put My Love Into You, and (to a lesser extent) You Shook Me All Night Long, I have to ask what were my parents thinking? I was 10 years old!

"No Brakes" by John Waite

The big hit off of John Waite's 1984 album No Brakes was Missing You, but this is one of those rare and wonderful albums that is filled with great tracks. From the hard rocking opening of Saturday Night to what is, in my opinion, the best track on this album, For Your Love, this album still holds up very well over 20 years later.

Molten Gold

There's little doubt in my mind why "Molten Gold" was, in part, a great name for Free's greatest hit, two-disc collection. The version of Molten Gold which appears on this collection is my favorite song of theirs by far. Of course, it also should be noted that Simon Kirke is also one of my favorite drummers. More on him when I start to talk about Bad Company, but, for now, just check out Burnin' Sky.

Disturbed

The CD that's in my car right now is Ten Thousand Fists by Disturbed. Prayer was the first song of theirs I discovered, and they make music with a great sound and a fantastic feel. More on them later.

Coheed & Cambria

Coheed & Cambria is one of those groups I discovered relatively recently. I discovered them after reading about Josh Eppard in Modern Drummer (not unusual for me!), and immediately fell head over heels in love with In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth: 3, which had been released soon before the article was published. I listened to their first two albums for months on end in my car, and simply could not get enough of their music. Their music has a great feel to it, the story is interesting (though more than just a bit strange), and they keep getting better and better. IMHO, Good Apollo, I'm... is their best album, and I can't wait for more from these guys.

Candlebox

I first discovered Candlebox when they were playing Simple Lessons on "Late Night with David Letterman". Candlebox quickly became one of my favorite groups of all time, and Scott Mercado remains one of my favorite drummers (check out You for four minutes and 56 seconds why this is the case).

I think Candlebox got lost in the Seattle grunge scene of the 90s, but they were a unique voice that is (IMHO) often overlooked.
