Description

Formed in 1997 from the remnants of popular indie acts Jawbreaker and Texas Is the Reason, Jets to Brazil showcases pop-punk poet laureate Blake Schwarzenbach's intelligent lyrics and muscular songs. The band pushes past the emo/punk sensibilities of those previous groups with big, bright production and sophisticated arrangements. Piano, strings, and acoustic guitars make appearances, and the subject matter reflects the emotional complexity of adulthood. The band released three critically acclaimed albums on the Jade Tree label in the early 2000s.

Biography

Hard-edged US alt pop outfit formed by musicians who were previously found in promising, late 90s, emo outfits such as Jawbreaker (vocalist/guitarist Blake Schwarzenbach), Handsome (bass player Jeremy Chatelain), and Texas Is The Reason (drummer Chris Daly), all of which broke up just as they were beginning to receive attention. Jets To Brazil originally formed during 1997 in Brooklyn, New York, when acquaintances Schwarzenbach and Chatelain bumped into each other by chance, and began jamming. It was Chatelain who invited his friend Daly to play drums and resulted in the recording of a demo and inaugural live shows on the east coast (as well as several European dates opening for the Promise Ring). The demo and live shows caught the attention of indie label Jade Tree, who signed the trio, and issued their debut recording, 1998's Orange Rhyming Dictionary. It soon became apparent however that the band needed a second guitarist to fill out their sound, which resulted in the hiring of Brian Maryansky (whom the band first met at a photo shoot for their debut album). In 2000, Jets To Brazil's released their second outing, Four Cornered Night. For this album the quartet experimented with their sound, by adding piano and percussion to the mix. Perfecting Loneliness moved further into folk pop territory, although the driving "Autumn Walker" and "William Tell Override" returned the band to their post punk roots.
