Biography

b. 1973, New York City, New York, USA. Rothberg was attending university and devoting much of her time to painting the self-portraits which later adorned the cover of her debut album when she landed a recording contract with Chrysalis Records. Having grown up in rural Connecticut, she first played music at her high school as part of a Rod Stewart copy band. She later travelled through Europe (where losing her passport and money inspired the song "Inside" while studying art in Paris) and America, busking to support herself. It was while playing alongside two blues buskers at the 14th Street station in New York that she was spotted by a passing EMI Records executive. Touring in support of Paul Westerberg, "Inside" became her debut single in September 1996. The attendant album, Between The 1 And The 9, its title acknowledging her preferred busking locations, was one of the best-received debuts in America during 1996. It comprised songs which balanced Rothberg's articulate, well-observed lyrics with song treatments which drew equally on the rock and folk traditions.
