{^Sunny Sundae Smile} continues in the same vein as {^The New Record By ...} -- pop melodies revved up by sheets and sheets of {$Jesus and Mary Chain}-style guitar noise. Somewhere in there, though, you can hear the beginnings of the lighter, more distinct sound that characterized {^Ecstasy} and {^Strawberry Wine}. None of the band's work before {^Isn't Anything} and the EPs that accompanied it are "true" {$MBV}, in the sense that we know them now, but they're fairly interesting on their own -- hardcore fans of the band who can locate this EP probably won't be too disappointed. ~ Nitsuh Abebe, All Music Guide
