"Slack Key Christmas"

~ November 27, 2007 at 23:34 (Views: 22 )

Charles Michael Brotman and his band of Slack Key musicians have created a great little Christmas music CD for those who don't care for singers. (Palm Records PALM4024)

1. Winter Wonderland (James "Kimo" West)
2. Santa Claus is Coming to Town (Dwight Tokumoto)
3. O Holy Night (Jeff Peterson)
4. Jingle Bells (Randy Lorenzo)
5. Away in a Manger (Dwight Tokumoto)
6. Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer (Wailau Ryder)
7. I'll Be Home for Christmas (Sonny Lim)
8. Silver Bells (Wailau Ryder)
9. Little Drummer Boy (Ben Kaili)
10. The First Noel (Charles Michael Brotman)
11. Mele Kalikimaka (Randy Lorenzo)
12. White Christmas (Sonny Lim)

I prefer to hear a singer's version of the song, but these are exceptional musicians. This CD should soothe the most rattled Christmas shopper.

"A Hawaiian Christmas" (Amy Hanaiali'i)

~ November 27, 2007 at 23:19 (Views: 27 )

Here's a notable music CD release for Christmas 2007. Amy Hanaiali'i, vocals; Chino Montero, Guitar and 'Ukulele; Jeff Peterson, Guitar and 'Ukulele; Stepen Jones, Upright Bass; Bobby Ingano, Steel Guitar. It adds up to great evening music with familiar Christmas music, complete with Hawaiian lyrics. (Tiki Man Records TMCD 8602) It goes like this:

1. Hamau E Na Kanaka ("Hark! The Herald Angels Sing")
2. Betelehema Iki E ("O Little Town of Bethelehem")
3. Po La'i E ("Silent Night")
4. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
5. Pomaika'i Wale Ko Ke Ao ("Joy to the World")
6. Ho'onani Kakou Ia Ia ("Adeste Fidelis," aka "Oh Come All Ye Faithful")
7. Ka Po La'ela'e Ka Hikina Mai ("It Came Upon A Midnight Clear")
8. Little Drummer Boy/Do You Hear What I Hear?
9. Po Hemolele ("O Holy Night")
10. White Christmas
11. Mele Kalikimaka
12. Mary Did You Know?
13. Ke Akua Mana E ("How Great Thou Art")
14. Ave Maria

It's a great little collection, nearly matched by the instrumental-only "Slack Key Christmas" music CD release.

News flash: "Raiatea" is Raiatea Helm

~ October 30, 2007 at 23:34 (Views: 16 )

On her first music CD release, the cover text refers to "Raiatea," but as long as I've heard this Moloka'i native play, she's always been introduced as "Raiatea Helm." For her 2007 "Island Blossom" music CD release, the graphic folk once again have "Raiatea" as the artist. Which just shows that you can't judge an musician by the cover graphics.

Na Mele marathon

~ May 29, 2007 at 3:39 (Views: 62 )

Starting on Sunday, 5/27/2007, I'll be playing the music of Hawai'i for this week. Why not "Hawaiian music"? Not every Hawaii musician composes/performs music in the Hawaiian language, so I'm including Na Leo Pilimehana, The Hawaiian Style Band, and others. Casual music listeners think of "Don Ho" and "Israel Kamakawiwo'ole" when "Hawaiian music" is mentioned. Don and IZ represent two thin slices of the Hawaii music scene, and this week they will be joined by Hoku Zuttermeister, Pilioha, Raiatea Helm, and 'A'lea. This session is leading up to the Na Hoku Hanohano awards, coming up next month. (For details, go to: http://www.mauicast.net/nahenahe, Keola Donaghy's web page, to see who/what is nominated and the categories.) There are others to consider this week: Melinda Carrol, Robi Kahakalau, Hapa, Frank DeLima (!), and Pure Heart...

That's: 'Ulupalakua Morning Dew

~ March 20, 2007 at 8:34 (Views: 128 )

'Ilupalakua Morning Dew
An instrumental track, dedicated to a father by his daughter. A musical journey remembering early morning hunting and hiking trips in upcountry Maui.

The Makaha Sons...of Ni'ihau?

~ February 20, 2007 at 8:53 (Views: 75 )

It's a small thing, but when Israel Kamakawiwo'ole left the group, he was the last "son of Ni'ihau." So, the difference between "The Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau" and "The Makaha Sons" is the absence/presence of the Kamakawiwo'ole twins. (Skippy Kamakawiwo'ole died as the group was becoming established in the Hawaiian music scene.) The generic "Makaha Sons" for early and late recordings by this group is a tad incorrect, but that's how things are interpreted from a distance.

Hello from "Washington, USA"?

~ February 18, 2007 at 2:52 (Views: 64 )

I noticed that "Wahi'awa, HI" looked odd on the world map, so I went to change my location. "USA" for Country was OK, as was "Hawaii" for State/Province. When I clicked on the world map, I found that I'd been moved to Washington D.C.! I changed the Zip code digits to the original five digit version, but I'm still popping up on the East coast U.S., which is verrry interesting. I wonder if I'll have to reregister to correct this 3,000-plus-mile move?
