Ability to tell a story well
Vern Batty has the ability to write lyrics that tell living stories and he delivers them well with (mainly) acoustic instruments and his voice. He has a characteristic and smooth voice that lends credence to the stories he tells. I enjoy the song Buttermilk Moon for it's resemblence to 30's or 40's popular music. Mountain Man induced vivid images of the life of a horseman on his homestead. His styles on the album Waiting For Daybreak range from Western ballad and acoustic folk to slide blues (No More) and instrumental. I know this album will not get old on me.
There is a review by New Mexico Magazine that gives a good description also. It is posted on his web site VernBatty.com. Listen to clips of his songs at CDBaby.com or download MP3's at Soundclick.com you won't regret it!
